Don't Panic

A computer that won't turn on is alarming, but it's often something simple. Work through these steps before assuming the worst.

Step 1: Check the Obvious

Before anything else:

  • **Is it plugged in?** Check both ends of the power cable
  • **Is the power point switched on?** (Check the wall switch)
  • **Is the power board turned on?** Try plugging into the wall directly
  • **For laptops:** Is the charger connected and showing a light?
  • Step 2: Identify What's Happening

Nothing at all (no lights, no sounds)

This usually means no power is reaching the computer:

  • Try a different power cable if you have one
  • Try a different power point
  • For desktops, check if the power supply switch on the back is set to "I" (on)
  • For laptops, try removing the battery (if removable) and running on charger only
  • Lights come on but no display

The computer is getting power but something else is wrong:

  • Check that your monitor is on and connected
  • Try a different cable between computer and monitor
  • Listen for beeps - these are error codes
  • For laptops, try connecting an external monitor
  • Starts then immediately shuts off

This often indicates overheating or a hardware issue:

  • Check if the computer feels very hot
  • Listen for the fans - are they spinning?
  • For desktops, open the case and check for dust buildup
  • Remove any recently installed hardware
  • Gets to Windows logo then crashes

This is usually a software issue:

  • Try **Safe Mode** (press F8 or Shift+F8 during boot)
  • Use Windows Startup Repair
  • Run System Restore to go back to a working state
  • Step 3: Try a Hard Reset

    For desktops:

  • Unplug the power cable
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds
  • Plug back in and try to turn on
  • For laptops:

  • Unplug the charger
  • Remove the battery (if possible)
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds
  • Reconnect power and try to turn on
  • Step 4: Check Your Monitor

Sometimes the computer IS on but the display isn't working:

  • Press **Caps Lock** - does the keyboard light toggle?
  • Connect an external monitor or TV via HDMI
  • Try pressing **Windows key + P** to change display output
