What Is a Hard Drive?

Your hard drive is where your computer stores everything permanently: your operating system, programs, documents, photos, and videos. There are two main types.

HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

The traditional type of storage:

  • **How it works:** Uses spinning magnetic disks with a moving read/write head
  • **Speeds:** Typically 80-160 MB/s
  • **Cost:** Cheaper per gigabyte
  • **Capacity:** Commonly 500GB to 4TB
  • **Lifespan:** 3-5 years on average
  • **Best for:** Storing large amounts of data where speed isn't critical (backup drives, media storage).

    SSD (Solid State Drive)

    The modern replacement:

  • **How it works:** Uses electronic flash memory with no moving parts
  • **Speeds:** Typically 500-3,500 MB/s (up to 20x faster than HDD)
  • **Cost:** More expensive per gigabyte
  • **Capacity:** Commonly 250GB to 2TB
  • **Lifespan:** 5-10 years on average
  • **Best for:** Your main drive where Windows and your programs are installed.

    Real-World Speed Difference

    | Task | HDD | SSD |

    |------|-----|-----|

    | Windows boot time | 60-90 seconds | 10-15 seconds |

    | Opening programs | Several seconds | Nearly instant |

    | File transfers | Minutes | Seconds |

    | Overall feel | Sluggish | Responsive |

    Should You Upgrade?

If your computer has an HDD and feels slow, an SSD upgrade is the **single best improvement** you can make. We see computers go from frustratingly slow to feeling brand new after an SSD upgrade.

    **What we do:**

  • Clone your existing hard drive to the new SSD
  • You keep all your files, programs, and settings
  • Your computer boots faster, opens programs faster, and feels responsive
  • The whole process typically takes 1-2 hours
