Why Backups Matter

Hard drives fail. It's not a question of if, but when. Viruses, accidental deletion, theft, or hardware failure can all cause permanent data loss. Regular backups protect your irreplaceable photos, documents, and files.

The 3-2-1 Backup Rule

Follow this simple rule for reliable backups:

  • **3** copies of your data
  • **2** different storage types (e.g., computer + external drive)
  • **1** copy stored offsite (e.g., cloud storage)
  • Option 1: External Hard Drive

    The simplest backup method:

  • Buy a USB external hard drive (1TB or 2TB is plenty for most people)
  • Plug it into your computer
  • Use Windows Backup (Settings > Update & Security > Backup)
  • Set it to back up automatically
  • **Pros:** Simple, no ongoing costs, fast

**Cons:** Can be damaged/stolen along with your computer

    Option 2: Cloud Backup

Store your files online with services like:

  • **OneDrive** (included free with Windows - 5GB, or 1TB with Microsoft 365)
  • **Google Drive** (15GB free)
  • **iCloud** (5GB free, primarily for Apple users)
  • **Pros:** Accessible from anywhere, protected from physical damage

**Cons:** Requires internet, ongoing subscription for larger storage

    Option 3: USB Flash Drive

Good for quick backups of specific important files:

  • Copy your most important documents and photos to a USB stick
  • Store it somewhere safe (different location from your computer)
  • Update it monthly
  • What Should You Back Up?

  • Family photos and videos
  • Important documents (tax returns, certificates, contracts)
  • Work files
