How Laptop Batteries Work

Modern laptops use lithium-ion batteries, which naturally degrade over time. However, how you use and charge your laptop can significantly affect how long the battery lasts.

Tips for a Longer Battery Life

1. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

  • Don't leave your laptop in a hot car
  • Don't use your laptop on soft surfaces that block airflow (beds, cushions)
  • Ideal operating temperature is 10-35°C
  • Heat is the number one enemy of battery health
  • 2. Don't Always Charge to 100%

  • Keeping your battery between **20% and 80%** is ideal for longevity
  • Many modern laptops have a "battery health" setting that limits charging to 80%
  • Check your laptop manufacturer's app for this setting
  • 3. Don't Let It Fully Drain Regularly

  • Occasional full drains are fine, but don't make it a habit
  • Plug in when the battery reaches 20-30%
  • Letting it sit at 0% for extended periods can damage the battery
  • 4. Unplug When Fully Charged (Older Laptops)

  • Newer laptops (2020+) usually manage this automatically
  • Older laptops benefit from being unplugged once fully charged
  • If you always use your laptop plugged in, enable the battery limiter if available
  • 5. Use the Right Charger

  • Always use the charger that came with your laptop or an equivalent
  • Cheap third-party chargers can damage your battery
  • USB-C chargers should match the required wattage
  • Check Your Battery Health

    Windows Battery Report

  • Open **Command Prompt** as administrator
  • Type: **powercfg /batteryreport**
  • Open the generated HTML file
  • Look at **Design Capacity** vs **Full Charge Capacity**
  • If full charge capacity is less than 60% of design capacity, consider replacement
  • Signs Your Battery Needs Replacing

  • Battery lasts less than 1 hour when it used to last 4-5 hours
  • Laptop shuts down unexpectedly at 20-30% battery
  • Battery is physically swollen (the laptop doesn't sit flat anymore)
  • Windows shows a "Consider replacing your battery" notification
  • A swollen battery is a safety hazard. If your laptop is bulging or the trackpad is being pushed up, stop using it and bring it in immediately.

    Extending Battery Life Day-to-Day

For longer battery life on a single charge:

  • Lower screen brightness
  • Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not needed
  • Close programs you're not using
  • Use Battery Saver mode (click the battery icon in the taskbar)

  • **Battery not holding charge?** Midland Computers offers battery replacement for most laptop brands. We use quality replacement batteries and can usually have it done same-day.
