Why Updates Matter

Windows updates aren't just annoying pop-ups - they serve critical purposes:

  • **Security patches** - Fix vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit
  • **Bug fixes** - Resolve issues that cause crashes or errors
  • **Feature improvements** - Add new functionality and better performance
  • **Driver updates** - Keep your hardware working properly
  • Skipping updates leaves your computer vulnerable to viruses, ransomware, and other cyber threats.

    How to Check for Updates

  • Open **Settings** (Windows key + I)
  • Click **Windows Update**
  • Click **Check for updates**
  • Install any available updates
  • Restart when prompted
  • Managing Update Timing

    Pause Updates

If now isn't a good time:

  • Go to **Settings > Windows Update**
  • Click **Pause updates**
  • Choose how long to pause (up to 5 weeks)
  • Updates will resume automatically after the pause period
  • Set Active Hours

Tell Windows when you're using your computer so it won't restart during that time:

  • Go to **Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options**
  • Click **Active hours**
  • Set your start and end times (e.g., 7 AM to 10 PM)
  • Windows will only restart for updates outside these hours
  • Schedule Restart Time

If an update is waiting for a restart:

  • Go to **Settings > Windows Update**
  • Click **Schedule the restart**
  • Choose a time and date when you won't be using the computer
  • Troubleshooting Update Problems

    Updates Won't Install

  • Restart your computer and try again
  • Run the **Windows Update Troubleshooter**: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update
  • Make sure you have at least **20GB free space** on your C: drive
  • Check your internet connection
  • Updates Are Taking Too Long

  • Large updates (feature updates) can take 30 minutes to over an hour
  • Don't turn off your computer while it says "Working on updates"
  • If stuck for more than 3 hours, try a hard restart
  • Update Caused a Problem

If your computer isn't working correctly after an update:

  • Go to **Settings > Windows Update > Update history**
  • Click **Uninstall updates**
  • Find the most recent update and uninstall it
  • Contact us if the problem persists
  • Types of Windows Updates

  • **Quality updates** (monthly): Security and bug fixes, usually small and quick
  • **Feature updates** (yearly): Major Windows upgrades, larger and take longer
  • **Driver updates** (as needed): Updates for your hardware
  • **Definition updates** (daily): Windows Defender virus definitions
  • Best Practices

  • **Don't delay updates for too long** - security patches are time-sensitive
  • **Save your work before updating** - in case a restart is needed
  • **Back up before major updates** - feature updates occasionally cause issues
  • **Keep at least 20GB free** on your main drive for updates
  • **Check updates weekly** if you don't leave your computer on all the time
