Do Not Just Turn It On and Start Browsing

Most people unbox their new computer and jump straight into using it. That works — but skipping a proper setup leads to security vulnerabilities, slow performance, and potential data loss down the track. This checklist takes about 30-60 minutes and saves you a lot of problems later.

1. Complete the Initial Windows Setup

Follow the on-screen prompts to choose your region and language, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in with a Microsoft account, and set up Windows Hello (face recognition or PIN) for easy and secure login.

2. Run Windows Update Immediately

Go to **Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates**. New computers often have months of pending updates. Install them all and restart before doing anything else.

3. Remove Bloatware

Most new PCs come pre-loaded with trial software and apps you will never use. Go to **Settings → Apps** and uninstall anything you do not recognise. This frees up storage and speeds up your machine.

4. Install Antivirus Protection

Windows Defender (built into Windows 11) is solid for most users. If you want extra protection, Malwarebytes Premium adds real-time scanning and is worth considering. Our [virus removal team](/services/virus-removal) recommends keeping any antivirus updated and running regular scans.

5. Set Up Automatic Backups — Do Not Skip This

**This is the most important step most people miss.** Set up OneDrive or Google Drive for your documents and photos, and an external hard drive for a complete local backup. If you need help transferring files from an old machine, our [computer setup team in Midland](/services/computer-repairs-midland) can handle the entire process for you.

6. Adjust Power Settings

Go to **Settings → System → Power** and set your screen sleep and power-off times to suit your usage.

7. Install Your Essential Software

  • Web browser: Chrome, Firefox, or Edge
  • Office suite: Microsoft 365 or LibreOffice (free)
  • PDF reader: Adobe Acrobat Reader (free)
  • Media player: VLC (free, plays everything)
  • 8. Register Your Warranty and Note the Serial Number

Visit the manufacturer website and register your new computer. Also write down the serial number from the sticker on the base of your device — you will need it for warranty claims and insurance purposes.
