What Is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts (locks) your files and demands payment to unlock them. It's one of the most devastating types of cyber attack because it can permanently destroy years of photos, documents, and important files.

How Does It Get On Your Computer?

The most common ways ransomware spreads:

  • **Email attachments** - fake invoices, shipping notifications, or job applications
  • **Malicious links** - in emails, social media, or fake websites
  • **Compromised websites** - legitimate websites that have been hacked
  • **USB drives** - infected drives from unknown sources
  • **Outdated software** - unpatched vulnerabilities in Windows or other programs
  • How to Protect Yourself

    1. Keep Regular Backups

This is your **number one protection**. If you have a recent backup, ransomware loses its power.

  • Use an external hard drive AND cloud backup
  • Keep at least one backup disconnected from your computer
  • Test your backups periodically to make sure they work
  • 2. Keep Everything Updated

  • Enable automatic Windows updates
  • Update your web browser regularly
  • Update Adobe Reader, Java, and other common software
  • Update your router firmware
  • 3. Be Careful with Email

  • Don't open attachments from unknown senders
  • Be suspicious of unexpected attachments even from people you know
  • Hover over links before clicking to see where they really go
  • Be wary of urgency ("Act now!" or "Your account will be closed!")
  • 4. Use Good Antivirus Software

  • Windows Defender (built into Windows) provides solid baseline protection
  • Consider a premium solution for additional features
  • Keep your antivirus updated and run regular scans
  • 5. Enable Controlled Folder Access

Windows has a built-in ransomware protection feature:

  • Open **Windows Security**
  • Go to **Virus & threat protection**
  • Click **Manage ransomware protection**
  • Turn on **Controlled folder access**
  • What to Do If You Get Ransomware

  • **Disconnect from the internet immediately** - unplug ethernet and turn off Wi-Fi
  • **Don't pay the ransom** - there's no guarantee you'll get your files back
  • **Don't try to remove it yourself** - you might make recovery harder
  • **Bring your computer to a professional** - we may be able to recover your files

  • **Worried about ransomware?** Midland Computers can set up proper backup systems and security measures to protect your business and personal computers. Prevention is always cheaper than recovery.
