What Are Phishing Emails?

Phishing emails are fake messages designed to trick you into giving away personal information, passwords, or money. They often look like they come from legitimate companies like banks, Australia Post, or the ATO.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • **Urgency:** "Your account will be suspended in 24 hours!"
  • **Generic greetings:** "Dear Customer" instead of your actual name
  • **Suspicious sender address:** Look carefully at the email address, not just the display name
  • **Grammar and spelling mistakes:** Legitimate companies proofread their emails
  • **Unexpected attachments:** Never open attachments you weren't expecting
  • **Requests for personal information:** Banks will never ask for your password via email
  • What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Email

  • **Don't click any links** in the email
  • **Don't download attachments**
  • **Don't reply** to the email
  • **Verify independently** - call the company using the number on their official website (not the number in the email)
  • **Report it** - forward phishing emails to the Australian Cyber Security Centre at ReportCyber
  • What If You've Already Clicked?

If you've clicked a link or provided information:

  • **Change your passwords immediately** - start with your email and banking passwords
  • **Contact your bank** if you shared financial information
  • **Run a virus scan** on your computer
  • **Bring your device to us** - we can check for malware and ensure your system is clean
  • Scammers are getting more sophisticated every year. It's not embarrassing to fall for one - it happens to thousands of Australians every day.
