Why Wi-Fi Security Matters
An unsecured Wi-Fi network can allow:
Neighbours using your internet (slowing it down)
Hackers intercepting your online activity
Unauthorised access to devices on your network
Legal liability if someone uses your connection for illegal activities
Step 1: Access Your Router Settings
Open a web browser
Type your router's address (usually **192.168.0.1** or **192.168.1.1**)
Enter the login credentials (check the sticker on your router for the default)
If you haven't changed the default password, **do this first**
Step 2: Change the Default Admin Password
This is different from your Wi-Fi password:
Find **Administration** or **System** settings
Change the router login password to something strong
Write it down and keep it somewhere safe
The default admin password is usually "admin" or "password" — anyone who knows this can change your settings.
Step 3: Set a Strong Wi-Fi Password
Find **Wireless** or **Wi-Fi** settings
Look for **Security** or **Encryption**
Select **WPA3** (or WPA2 if WPA3 isn't available)
Set a strong password (at least 12 characters)
Never use WEP — it can be cracked in minutes
Step 4: Change Your Network Name (SSID)
Change the default network name (like "NETGEAR-5G" or "Telstra1234")
Don't include personal information in the name
Avoid names that identify your router brand
Step 5: Enable Guest Network
If you have visitors who need Wi-Fi:
Enable the **Guest Network** feature
Set a different, simpler password
This keeps guests separate from your main network
Change the guest password periodically
Step 6: Keep Your Router Updated
Check for firmware updates in your router settings
Enable automatic updates if available
Old firmware can have security vulnerabilities
Additional Security Tips
**Disable WPS** (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) — it's a known security weakness
**Disable remote management** unless you specifically need it
**Use the 5GHz band** for devices that are close to the router (faster and less interference)
**Position your router centrally** in your home for best coverage
Optimal Router Placement
For best coverage:
Place it in a **central location**
Keep it **elevated** (on a shelf, not on the floor)
Avoid placing it near **metal objects or mirrors**
Keep it away from **microwaves and cordless phones**
Don't hide it in a **cupboard or behind furniture**
