Common Signs Your Laptop Screen Needs Replacing

Is your laptop screen cracked, flickering, or showing strange colours? Here are the signs that tell you it is time for a screen replacement — and what the process involves.

Laptop Screen Problems Are Among the Most Common Repairs

A damaged or failing laptop screen is one of the most frequent repairs we see at Midland Computers. The good news is that most screen replacements are completed same day, and a new screen genuinely transforms the usability of your machine.

Signs Your Laptop Screen Needs Replacing

1. Visible Cracks or Physical Damage

Cracked screens are the most obvious case. Even small cracks typically spread over time with normal use, and the pressure changes involved in opening and closing the lid accelerate this. Once a screen is cracked, it needs replacing — there is no repair for the LCD panel itself.

2. Black Screen With the Machine Running

If the laptop turns on (you can hear it, see the keyboard light up, or hear Windows loading sounds) but the screen stays black, this could indicate a failed backlight, a faulty display cable, or a dead screen. Connect the laptop to an external monitor — if the image appears on the external display, the screen itself is likely the problem.

3. Lines or Bars Across the Screen

Horizontal or vertical lines — especially if they are consistent and appear in the same position — typically indicate a failing LCD panel. This usually worsens over time and does not resolve on its own.

4. Flickering or Flashing Display

Intermittent flickering can indicate a loose display cable (sometimes fixable without a full screen replacement) or a failing backlight. If the flickering is constant or worsening, screen replacement is usually needed.

5. Colour Distortion or Blotchy Areas

Pressure damage from carrying a laptop with something on top of it, or from a heavy object pressing on the lid, causes internal LCD damage that manifests as ink-blot or oil-slick patterns, colour bleeds, or large black areas.

6. Dim or Yellowed Display

A screen that is noticeably dimmer or more yellow than it used to be may have a failing backlight. On older laptops this is sometimes adjustable in settings, but if it persists, the screen is likely at end of life.

What the Replacement Process Looks Like

Laptop screen replacements typically take 1-3 hours. A technician carefully disassembles the lid assembly, removes the damaged panel, fits the new screen, reconnects the display cable, and reassembles. The laptop is tested thoroughly before you collect it.
