Why Is My Computer So Slow?

Over time, computers accumulate temporary files, background programs, and software updates that can bog down performance. The good news is that most slowness issues can be fixed without professional help.

Step 1: Restart Your Computer

It sounds simple, but many people leave their computers on for weeks. A fresh restart clears temporary memory and can instantly improve performance.

**How to restart properly:**

  • Click the Start menu
  • Click the Power icon
  • Select "Restart" (not "Shut down" then turn on)
  • Step 2: Check for Windows Updates

Outdated Windows can cause slowdowns and security vulnerabilities.

  • Open Settings (Windows key + I)
  • Click "Windows Update"
  • Click "Check for updates"
  • Install any available updates
  • Restart your computer after updates install
  • Step 3: Disable Startup Programs

Too many programs launching at startup is one of the biggest causes of slow performance.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Click the "Startup" tab
  • Right-click programs you don't need at startup
  • Select "Disable"
  • Keep your antivirus enabled at startup. Only disable programs you recognise and don't need immediately.

Step 4: Free Up Disk Space

A nearly full hard drive significantly slows down your computer.

  • Run Disk Cleanup (search for it in the Start menu)
  • Empty your Recycle Bin
  • Uninstall programs you no longer use
  • Move large files to an external drive
  • Step 5: Consider an SSD Upgrade

If your computer still has a traditional hard drive (HDD), upgrading to a Solid State Drive (SSD) is the single biggest performance improvement you can make. We can clone your existing drive to an SSD so you won't lose any data.

**Still slow?** If these steps don't help, there may be a hardware issue or malware infection. Bring your computer to Midland Computers for a professional diagnostic.
